National and International, Advanced and FEI course designer Mark McGowan has been awarded the role and recently visited the College to start planning the courses for the fourday competition. This is the second time Mark has designed for a major European Championships after designing for the 2008 Junior and Young Rider Championships in Prague.Mark, who runs the Hallmark Stud at Kilmarnock with his wife Holly, herself a highprofile competitor, is looking forward to the challenge of designing for the European Pony Championships. He said: "I've done many top national pony competitions and a few abroad, so I am familiar with the requirements of this type of competition."Obviously I have to design a course that's commensurate with this level of competition and rider, and that meets the needs of this standard of competition. I'm looking forward to the challenge and I'm honoured to be given such a prestigious home event."Mark has both World Cup qualifiers and Nation's Cups under his belt and Bishop Burton College's equine director Kim Knightley is looking forward to working with him in the run up to the Championships."I'm really glad that Mark has accepted the job and taken the time to visit us to see the College and its facilities," said Kim. "The new show jumping arena was completed just before Christmas so Mark has been able to have a look at the surface, see where it's located and start formulating his plans."Mark continued: "I'm very encouraged by the College and its facilities. The new arena is a good size and it's all very competitorfriendly  it's a splendid setting for the Championships."The fact that the surface went down prior the Christmas is great as it'll have been through a winter and will be in fantastic condition for July."Now I've seen the arena and the rest of the site I can get planning and submit my ideas to the show jumping technical delegate by May."Although in the very early stages of planning, Mark will be looking at providing a course that tests the competitors gradually over the four days of competition so they can build up to the final competition.
